On May 15th, Supervisor Mark Lesko and Councilman Steve Fiore-Rosenfeld visited the Stafford Technology Center, the Setauket headquarters of Stafford Associates, to congratulate the company on the Gold LEED certification of their building.

The company is an information technology business that was founded in 1981 by Dolores V. Stafford and Dr. Eugene F. Stafford. They have grown over the years and moved into the new, a 48,000 square foot, $15 million building in July of 2010. Stafford Associates provides web hosting, networking design services, web design and development.

“The Town congratulates Stafford Associates on the LEED Gold Certification – which is not easy to attain - and hopes that the Stafford family continues to grow and expand their business in Brookhaven,” said Supervisor Lesko, “Stafford’s decision to construct a state-of-the-art green building is a testament to the forward-thinking and environmentally friendly way in which they run their company.”

“The Stafford family have made a strong commitment to the Three Village community by expanding their business while at the same time taking giant steps to preserve and protect our environment by building this marvelous LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified building,” said Councilman Steve Fiore-Rosenfeld, “I am proud to have played a part by working with the Staffords, the active citizens on our civic, and our town government, to see to it that construction of this magnificent ‘green building’ became a reality and to congratulate them on achieving Gold LEED certification.”

Stafford President Dolores Stafford said, “I am extremely proud to have received LEED Gold Certification for our building. We have worked hard to incorporate as many green initiatives into our building as possible in order to make it not only pleasing to look at, but, to be environmentally friendly as well.”

The design of the Stafford Technology Center includes geothermal heating and cooling, preferred parking for hybrids, rainwater collection, dark sky lighting, a tighter more efficient building envelope and recycled building materials.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) consists of a rating system for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings, homes and neighborhoods. Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), LEED is intended to provide building owners and operators a concise framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions. Buildings can qualify for four levels of certification; Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum.

The Brookhaven Industrial Development Agency also provided incentives to Stafford Associates to move to Bennetts Road. The Brookhaven Industrial Development Agency provides incentives to facilitate the acquisition, construction, reconstruction and equipping of commercial and industrial projects in the Town of Brookhaven to create jobs. Projects may be eligible for tax incentives. The Brookhaven Industrial Development Agency has been pro-active in not just attracting and retaining businesses, but also focusing the private sector on redevelopment.
